Hide Away Safe Heat Resistant Test
The Hide Away Safe range of High Security Safes are manufactured with the Hide Away Safe Co, the manufacturer, own special formulae of Lexan Polycarbonate. While this particular formulae of polycarbonate is extremely heat insulative it is not officially classified as fire proof.
There are no fire standards written for a Lexan Polycarbonate High Security Safe because the Hide Away Safe Co, the manufacturer of the Hide Away Safe, is the only manufacturer in the World to make a High Security Safe from Lexan Polycarbonate, consequently there has been no specific fire rating given to the Hide Away Safe.
NB: Nothing is exactly fire proof unless it is
concrete lined, the Hide Away Safe is termed
fire resistant and is very heat insulative.
In fact more insulative than metal safes. |
Monitored Heat Test
A question we are asked occasionally:
Is the Hide Away Safe fire proof.
To answer that question in 1995 we conducted a monitored heat test on a Metal Safe and the Hide Away Safe. We wanted to compare the condition of an identical piece of paper in each Safe after being placed inside a kiln for 15 minutes at 400c.
This Is What We Did
A piece of paper was torn in half and one half was placed inside a Metal Safe and the other half was placed inside a Hide Away Safe. Then both safes were placed in a kiln that had been pre-heated to 400c and left in the kiln for 15 minutes.
The End Result Being
After 15 minutes both safes were taken out of the kiln. The internal temperature of the Metal Safe reached 250c and the piece of paper inside was starting to char (paper will start to ignite around 250c) compared with the Hide Away Safe internal temperature was only 150c and the piece of paper inside was unaffected.
This Experiment Showed
Physical condition of both safes:
 |
Metal Safe - relatively unaffected by the heat. |
 |
Hide Away Safe - a little sad looking, it needed replacing. |
Physical condition of the piece of paper inside both safes:
 |
Metal Safe - the paper was basically destroyed by the heat. |
 |
Hide Away Safe - the paper was unaffected. |
The protection of the contents inside a Safe
is the most crucial factor of Safe ownership. |
The price to replace the Hide Away Safe is a small investment after the trauma of a fire.
WARNING from the editor. People tend to die in house fires when they spend time removing valuables and keepsakes thinking the fire is not all that serious.
It is the smoke that generally kills
not the flames. |
